Washington, DC —Today, the National Consumers League (NCL) and its partners announced the winners of the ninth annual Script Your Future Medication Adherence Team Challenge, a competition designed to engage health profession students and faculty across the nation by encouraging teams to develop creative initiatives to raise public awareness about the importance of medication adherence in improving health outcomes and reducing total healthcare costs. This year’s winners are University of Charleston School of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences: Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy, Howard University College of Pharmacy, Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy.

The 2021 Medication Adherence Team Challenge is part of the national Script Your Future public awareness campaign coordinated by NCL with support from its partners and the Challenge sponsors—the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation, and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA).

The Team Challenge was established in 2011 to nurture adherence-minded values in future generations of professionals entering the workplace.

Each year, top performing teams are honored with a National Award for overall outstanding team achievement, or a Focused Award, which recognizes outstanding team achievement in the specific areas of health disparity/under-represented community outreach, media/communications outreach, or creative interprofessional team event, and technology-based interventions.

In 2021, our Team Challenge student health professionals were an integral part of their respective communities’ COVID-19 response. This year, over 5,000 future healthcare professionals and volunteers from across 13 states participated in the Team Challenge. Collectively, the teams directly counseled close to 150,000 patients and vaccinated over 134,000 consumers, nationwide. This year’s teams resulted in greater consumer outreach, than in the past 10 years of the Team Challenge combined! Since the Team Challenge began in 2011, more than 26,000 future healthcare professionals have directly counseled nearly 237,000 patients and reached nearly 26 million consumers.

This year’s winners, selected from dozens of applications and 78 participating educational institutions, are listed below.

National Award Winner: University of Charleston School of Pharmacy – WV

For the ninth consecutive year, the University Of Charleston School Of Pharmacy (UCSOP) enthusiastically participated in the Script Your Future campaign. For the 2021 campaign, UCSOP collaborated with the University of Charleston Physician Assistant program, the University Of Charleston School Of Nursing, and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department (KCHD). For many weeks during the initial dissemination of the Covid19 vaccine, West Virginia was number one or number two in the nation for vaccine doses administered per capita. The University of Charleston (School of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Program and School of Nursing) was consistently mentioned as an active participant in the Covid19 vaccination clinics in Charleston and the surrounding communities. As a result of their robust outreach, UCSOP was able to directly counsel over 45,000 patients on medication adherence, and successfully vaccinated over 50,000 patients in the community.

National Award Winner: University of the Sciences, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy – PA

This year will mark USciences’ fourth consecutive run in the Script Your Future Team Challenge. With the many restrictions imposed around social gatherings, the USciences team focused their outreach to social media. Student health professionals combined their Instagram educational content with the Script Your Future resources and created a theme of the week for outreach to   the West Philadelphia community as well as their student population. In order to enhance their presence virtually, the USciences team introduced a new vision: Adherence is Everywhere, which captures the true nature of medication adherence as a holistic health intervention. During the Team Challenge period, from February to April, the team participated in 15 vaccine clinics and 1 student-run free clinic for homeless men reaching an average of 1,087 individuals per clinic. At these clinics, their team communicated with the public about their medications. Over the course of the Team Challenge, the Loma Linda team successfully counseled over 63,000 patients and inoculated over 60,000 individuals against COVID-19 in their community. The team also observed an impressive high rate of return for the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, where 85% of Pfizer patients and 96% Moderna patients returned to complete their COVID-19 vaccine series. Amidst their tremendous outreach, the Loma Linda team even received a visit from CA Governor, Gavin Newson, commending the team for its efforts.

Rookie Award Finalist: Palm Beach Atlantic University School of Pharmacy – FL
Palm Beach Atlantic University School of Pharmacy, FL, also made a strong showing in the Team Challenge as a first-time competitor.

Health Disparities/Underserved Focus Award Winner: Howard University College of Pharmacy – DC

Howard University College of Pharmacy has proudly maintained their standing as the Health Disparities Focus Award Winner this year. Being the only Historically Black College of Pharmacy in the nation’s capital, Howard University students decided to educate minority populations on the importance of medication adherence and vaccine confidence, with an added focus towards the African American community in DC. In an effort to increase vaccination awareness among minority communities the Howard University College of Pharmacy partnered with local grocery store chain Giant, Unity Health Care community health centers, the DC Department of Human Services, and Howard University to set up COVID clinics.  Pharmacy student volunteers, prepared, administered, and counselled patients about medication adherence and vaccine hesitancy.

Media Outreach Award Winner: Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy – PA

The Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy Script Your Future team utilized a variety of media sources to help spread the word on medication adherence and vaccine confidence, and to promote their community events. The Wilkes University team produced a video on medication adherence featuring tools and techniques to help patients take their medications as directed. The team collaborated with local community pharmacies to use as the setting for the video, which you can watch here. Additionally, the Wilkes University team hosted a Facebook Watch COVID-19 Q&A with a School of Pharmacy faculty members, discussing the hot-topics of vaccine hesitancy in light of the COVID-19 vaccines being approved for emergency use authorization. Creative Interprofessional Team Event Award Winner: University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy – PA

The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy team demonstrated a robust interprofessional partnership throughout their campaign outreach. University of Pittsburgh students participated in eleven mass vaccination clinics in partnership with students, faculty and staff from The University of Pittsburgh’s Medical School, Nursing School, Dental Medicine and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, in addition to the faculty and staff of the School of Pharmacy, and volunteers from the public. This interprofessional collaboration provided patients with a holistic approach to their health, from pre-screenings completed by both pharmacy and nursing students to patient monitoring post-vaccination in the resting areas by nursing, medical and physician assistant students. Utilizing this collaboration allowed other pharmacy students to provide medication education to patients who asked, including Script Your Future pamphlet distribution and personal conversations.

Technology Innovation Focused Award: Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy – CA

The Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU), College of Pharmacy team focused on the technological expansion of the school’s health information and infographics website. To facilitate this expansion, the WesternU team incorporated QR codes, an automatic text message system, a shortened website link, and social media platforms, which direct patients to the University website. The website counsels patients by providing a variety of resources for patients to help manage their chronic diseases and is readily accessible using a computer at home or any mobile device. The website is divided into different sections: Disease states, disease information from various health professions, and useful features such as a medication coupon and health insurance online search function. A word from NCL and our generous Script Your Future sponsors

“Over the past decade, our Script Your Future teams have made their communities healthier, one patient interaction at a time, by fostering lasting medication and vaccine adherence values. This year was especially significant, as Script Your Future teams coordinated their outreach in tandem with the national COVID-19 response”, said NCL Executive Director Sally Greenberg. “We are so impressed by the vast impact these talented young professionals have had in their communities, where collectively, our student teams have facilitated over 280,000 patient interactions via direct counseling and vaccine administrations! Year after year, we continue to be inspired by these future healthcare leaders as they demonstrate the value of medication and vaccine adherence through interprofessional collaboration, innovative public health interventions, and a multifaceted understanding of health disparities.”

“Innovative initiatives combatting vaccine hesitancy and increasing patient medication adherence are crucial to advancing public health and patient care. This rings even more true as the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign is well underway” said NACDS Foundation President Sara Roszak.  “The annual Script Your Future Challenge offers a prime example of how interprofessional student collaboration and addressing non-adherence can positively improve access to equitable care.”

“APhA continues to be impressed by the creative efforts of the student pharmacists and health professional students participating in the Script Your Future Medication Adherence Team Challenge. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, these students vaccinated thousands of patients and counseled them on their medications and the importance of medication adherence. The Team Challenge demonstrates the value of interprofessional care in improving patients’ health. We congratulate the winning teams and all of the students for a job well done!” said APhA Executive Vice President and CEO Scott J. Knoer, MS, PharmD, FASHP.
